Hydro Toronto - Project RIDGECREST

Toronto Hydro-Electric System Limited would like to update you of Project RIDGECREST designed to help improve the electricity system in our ward. The boundaries for the project include McNicoll Avenue (North), Warden Avenue (East), Sheppard Avenue East (South), and Victoria Park Avenue (West). The work is expected to begin in late April and continue into 2014. For more information, click here for a notice that will be sent by Toronto Hydro to residents in the affected area.

Bridlewood Mall Development Update

Negotiations are underway to have Target open up at the former Zellers location. At the moment they do not own the location. I believe this will be a great benefit to the area and give new life to the mall

There is also unfounded speculation that the Mall is up for sale.

One of the major issues is parking. This was the same issue that I had raised with both the mall owner (Fishman Group) and the condo developer (Malibu). Target is also concerned about its visibility, as the planned condos which will block the view of their signage from the street.
When the Mall decided to go condo they did not fully consult their Tenants nor was Target of their plans for development.

We are told that the north section condos have pre-sold about 300 units.

Things are currently in flux until some resolution among the parties is resolved.

Update on the Glendinning Plaza

This plaza is losing it's vigour and life. Preliminary discussions have taken place with the mall owner.

An application will be made to allow for a drive thru Tim Hortons with the possibility of some seating capacity. It will occupy the area north of where the spa is presently located.

I have stressed to the applicants that they will be responsible for cleaning all garbage on the street related to this activity.

In speaking with the owner, I have asked them to install proper lighting and cameras to discourage loitering and criminal activity. I have also asked if they will work to bring in a walk in clinic and small pharmacy. A request to remove the clothing box was also discussed.

Re: Porter Airlines Proposal

We would like to share this letter we received from a concernced citizen regarding the proposed plans for the Toronto Island Airport

Councillor Del Grande,

The proposal by Porter Airlines to operate Bombardier C-Series jets from Billy Bishop airport has generated widespread reaction. Because this proposal has tremendous potential to quickly become embroiled in sensational rhetoric, I respectfully ask you, as a city councilor, to fully investigate the facts before forming an opinion on this matter.

The fact is that the aircraft being proposed, Bombardier¹s new C-Series regional jet, uses a new engine technology known as GTF, or Geared Turbo Fan. The bottom line is that an aircraft powered by these GTF engines will emit lower noise and vibration levels than the turboprops presently operating from Billy Bishop airport. The engine type has been in development for more than 10 years by Pratt & Whitney Canada, and will also be used on next-generation Airbus and Boeing jets as well as the Bombardier product. The engine is a Canadian high tech success story.

The turboprop aircraft presently operating from Billy Bishop airport are, in fact, jet powered. Their turboprop powerplant uses a small jet engine that spins a turbine, which in turn drives the propeller. So there are two sources of noise from this arrangement - from the internal jet engine itself, and another from the propeller. The GTF engines on the C-Series would, in approximate terms, equal the sound of the turboprop¹s jet engine, minus the additional propeller noise. In practical terms, the sound of traffic on the Gardiner Expressway would easily drown it out.

The benefits associated with GTF technology go beyond noise abatement, however. The new engines produce considerably lower carbon emissions compared to the jet engines currently in use on most civil aircraft - up to 55% less. And because these new engines are designed to be fully compatible with biofuels (Air Canada began experimenting with these last year), there is potential to reduce carbon emissions even further with the adoption of biofuel products.

Since a significant proportion of passenger traffic through Billy Bishop airport is business travellers coming into Toronto, eliminating hundreds of long taxi rides downtown from Pearson airport each day can only help lower carbon emissions still further.

In short, the new Bombardier C-Series aircraft are nothing like the loud, smoky jets we all grew up with. The aircraft are extraordinarily quiet, and far cleaner than anything else in the sky - including the turboprops already in use.

Full disclosure - I have absolutely zero connection to Porter Airlines, Pratt & Whitney Canada or Bombardier. My interest in this comes as someone who travels on business extensively, and who fully supports a couple of outstanding Canadian-made products. Clean Toronto Together program begins in April
The warm weather is fast-approaching, revealing a winter’s worth of debris and litter. This is our opportunity to get involved and help keep Toronto clean.

Students and businesses are invited to participate in the Corporate and School Clean-up Day on Friday, April 19. Make the area near your school or business shine.

The following day, it's time for a Toronto tradition. Mayor Rob Ford's annual Community Clean-up Day is a great way to get together with friends, neighbours and co-workers to reduce everyday litter. What better way to turn your ideas into action than to get involved.

It only takes minutes to make a difference. The event takes place on Saturday, April 20 (the alternative date if your group prefers or if the weather doesn't cooperate is Sunday, April 21). Get together with family, friends and neighbours and clean a public space that is important to you – it could be a park or a local street.

Participating groups can pick up their GLAD garbage and recycling bags at Toronto Community Centres, Civic Centres, and participating Pizza Pizza locations starting April 2 while supplies last.

We ask groups to register before April 15 so the City can coordinate where City crews can pick up the collected litter. You can register for your clean up event or get more information at toronto.ca/cleantoronto. If the internet is not an option, call 311.

And don't forget, if you see graffiti vandalism or illegal postering, report it by calling 311.

Mandatory Downspout Disconnect is getting close

An important announcement from our upcoming Spring 2013 Newsletter:

Downspout disconnection in the area of Ward 39 which is west of Kennedy Road must be completed by December 3, 2013. If you live east of Kennedy Road, you must disconnect the downspout by December 3, 2016.

If you have considered all the options and find it is not technically feasible, you could apply to the City for an exemption by completing a Mandatory Downspout Disconnection Exemption Application.

Financial assistance (up to a maximum of $500), is available for low-income seniors or individuals with disability who apply for the assistance and meet the criteria.
